Alzheimer’s disease is a frightening condition for everybody, not only the person who is diagnosed with it. The mental state of the sufferer slowly deteriorates until they the basic brain functions fail and the person dies. The entire scope of the disease is not fully understood, but it does follow some basic guidelines for virtually everybody. The progression of the disease is very slow in the early stages, and in fact, many times the symptoms of the disease may go undetected until it is already advancing into the second and more serious stage.

The earlier that the disease can be caught, the sooner a number of treatments can be implemented. Better diet, physical and mental exercise and a variety of medications can all be used to slow the progression of this identity thief before devestating effects are realized. Some of the treatments are nothing more than common sense and should be standard for all people, but become even more important for the Alzeheimer’s sufferer and family members.

The first step should be diet and better health. The more fruits, vegetables and lean proteins that can be added to the diet, the better. Remember the old adage that fish is brain food? Science has proven this, and fish (especially lean salmon) should become a regular part of the diet. Salmon is an excellent source of Omega-3’s, a vital nutrient for brain health. The second step, which goes hand in hand with better diet is more exercise, not only for the body but the mind as well. Make sure that the loved one takes a daily walk, preferably along the exact same route and talk about what you see. This will not only reinforce the mental stimulation, but will keep the physical activity up as well. Stimulate the brain as much as possible with games, conversation and music. Crossowrd puzzles, find-a-words and trivia questions are excellent ways to keep the brain active.

Finally, discuss Alzheimer’s medications with your loved one’s doctor. There are several different medications on the market which slow the progression of the cognitive losses that make this such a devestating disease. Any time that you can buy is beneficial.
