Lupus is an autoimmune disease that involves dysfunction of the immune system that develop antibodies that attack healthy cells and tissue of the body. It can lead to various types of disorders in a patient that is suffering from the disease. One of the disorders is a skin disease that develops a type of rash and erythematous lesions. This is one of the most common disorders a sufferer experiences. It is one of the first disorders that appear on the patient. It can be characterized in both types of form, discoid and systemic of the disease. The other symptoms that lupus causes may come and go the rash are hard to overcome and get rid of.

The most common places the rash will appear are on the face, neck, scalp, shoulder areas, feet, chest, palms and back. Skin lesions may also accompany the rash.

Discoid form of lupus, the rash will appear on various parts of the body and it affects the skin in larger patches. It is crusty and hyperpigmentation is involved. Discoid lupus generally leaves scarring due to affecting the deep layers of skin.

Subacute cutaneous lupus rash appear commonly in the areas of the body that are exposed to the sun. They are scaly, circular patches that can increase in size. This type of rash doesn’t leave any scarring, but can leave hyperpigmetation of the skin. It will generally disappear when the disease goes into remission.

The treatments for these lupus rashes are as follows:
• Avoid the sun and wear clothes that will cover arms, and legs. Put on a hat to cover your face, and always apply sunscreen with a high SPF.
• Corticosteroid cream is prescribed to put on the rashes
• Antimalarial medication prescription helps treat rashes

If the symptoms are more severe the doctor may prescribe a higher dose or stronger prescription of corticosteroid either in pill form or injection. The treatments may work for some sufferers and others it may not. Research is still in focus of finding a cure and better medicine to help fight lupus.
